How to Become a Milk Supplier

Burra Foods is organisation focussed on value added products and responsiveness to market demand. Our recruitment, quality and payment systems are matched to this strategy and are a cornerstone of our business.

Burra Foods has consistently paid a premium price for milk to reflect the quality of milk supplied, the flexibility of supply, and the value this adds to our product range.

The key criteria for selection of farm suppliers are as follows:

Location: Our pick up zone extends to a 50 km radius from Korumburra

Off Peak Milk: The ideal supplier for Burra Foods milks all year round. In most cases this is achieved by a split calving pattern – typically 2/3 Spring 1/3 Autumn. This gives best advantage in our payment system where incentives are focussed on milk production from February to July.

Quality: Consistent high quality milk is essential for our product mix.

Our 'A-Grade' milk conforms to the following standards:
BMCC < 250,000
Standard Plate Count < 20,000 (< 80,000 Bactoscan)
Thermoduric Count < 2,000

Payment penalties apply to milk outside these standards.

Quality Assurance Compliance: The export markets we service demand quality assurance systems that extend all the way back to farm supply. Burra Foods QA system is a practical management tool that has been developed in consultation with farm suppliers and Dairy Food Safety Victoria.

Recruitment is done on an as needs basis but we invite suppliers to submit their details for retention on our list of potential suppliers. We require volume, fat, and protein data by month as well as quality records for the two years previous.
