Meet the Hornbys

10 June 2025

Since 2008, Brendan Hornby has been running a dairy farm in Newry, managing a herd of around 300 cows. His connection to the land and farming life have been shaped by family and a love for the outdoors.

How did you start in dairy farming?

I grew up on the family farm and spent every minute I could out in the paddocks with Dad. After leaving school, I did an apprenticeship as a first-class machinist and worked in the trade for a few years. But when Dad had health issues, I returned to the farm to help out. I’ve never left.

What’s life on the farm like today?

My wife Amy and I live on the farm with our three kids. Amy handles the paperwork and a milker comes in five days a week – I take care of everything else. Dad now lives on our turnout block. He looks after the young stock and the bulls, which keeps him involved without the heavier responsibilities.

The lifestyle suits us perfectly. We’ve got the freedom to go camping for a few days whenever we like, and our kids get to grow up surrounded by the farm. My son, in particular, loves it. He’s in the sheds with me every chance he gets.

How was the succession planning process?

We didn’t have any issues with succession planning. Dad and I have always worked well together. We had an unspoken understanding of what needed to be done and when. As Mum and Dad started travelling more, I took over the bulk of the work. Everything happened naturally, without any dramas.

What are the challenges of dairy farming?

The biggest challenge is the cost of outgoings. Prices haven’t come down since the pandemic, and the weather doesn’t help. We’re going through a partial drought, and for the first time in six years, we might run out of water. I’ve already dried out a few turnout blocks, and I’ll have to feed the cows more. If next year is dry too, I’ll have to buy in feed, and that’s a big expense.

Why did you choose to partner with Burra Foods?

We signed up with Burra more than a decade ago and I’ve never looked back. They’re brilliant to deal with – always helpful and supportive.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m happy with where we’re at now. Mum and Dad have provided a great legacy for us and for our kids, and I’m proud to keep it going.
