In February, Burra Foods hosted 15 of Gippsland Milk Supply Partners to attend the Australian Dairy Conference in Hobart and tour a range of Tasmanian dairy farms.

Visiting eight farms in total, and spending two hours at each, meant that the pre-Conference days were busy but very rewarding.

Tasmanian dairy farmers who hosted the group told the story of their farm, what they are doing, where they are going with innovation and what the future looks like for them. It gave our Milk Supply Partners a good idea of the industry in Tasmania, with its different climate and better access to water. Comparisons highlighted the fact that farmers adapt to their environment, the same as they do everywhere.

The Conference covered key topics of interest to dairy farmers including succession planning, milk growth, lack of skilled labour, animal welfare, climate change and sustainability.

The program also included inspiring talks by dairy farmers who had achieved in the face of adversity through a positive mindset and focus.

The enthusiasm at the Conference was infectious, as attendees took advantage of the opportunity to network with their peers as well as bankers, feed companies, processors, and others.

All our Milk Supply Partners learned more about the potential for their own farms, made valuable connections and enjoyed each other’s company. They are now looking forward to next year’s Australian Dairy Conference, which will be held in Melbourne.
